On April 10 & 11, scientists and students from Chaminade University hosted 4 STEM workshops for attendees of the Hawaii STEM Conference held at the Hawaii Convention Center.
Chaminade Biology students, Assistant Professors, Data Scientists, and researchers transformed a conference room into a Biochemistry lab with the help of enthusiastic students, lab coats, safety glasses, gloves, pipettes, vortex mixers, tubes, and micro assay plates. The students learnt how to use a micropipettor, make a serial dilution and standard curve, and perform a colorimetric assay to determine the amount protein in an unknown sample.
We shared what it’s like to be a college student. How college provides opportunities to discover what interesting, and to prepare oneself for a career. What surprised many students was that successful scientists may not have started out knowing exactly what they wanted to do when the left high school. It was during college that they discovered what interested them, and they pursued every opportunity given to them.
It was an honor to host students from Lanai, Kauai, Molokai, Maui, Hawaii, and from Oahu in our workshop.
