Wow! What a milestone for I Am a Scientist!

I wanted to share some great news with you: I Am a Scientist has just reached several milestones.

  • This is our 10th year providing outreach
  • We just served our 20,000th student

All this was made possible by:

  • 1912 volunteers
  • 6,679 hours of volunteer time

MAHALO for the support and dedication of students and staff of the Natural Sciences & Mathematics division of Chaminade University, and the many donors and organizations that have supported us. Without all of you, these milestone would not have been reached!

Our first IAS event was on Sept 15, 2009 at Moanalua Elementary School on Oahu.  It was a family science night event for 90 students and their parents.  Dr. Helen Turner, Dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and Dr. Stephanie Genz, Dean of the School of Nursing, along with 17 Research Staff and Undergraduate Science students transformed a school cafeteria into a hands-on science laboratory. Here’s a picture from that day.

September 15, 2009. IAS’s first event!

I wonder where these kids are now?

Volunteers and supplies delivered to the first IAS event by a van belonging to Lori’s brother!

Then and now. The image above shows our first IAS event where I borrowed my brother’s van to deliver all the supplies and equipment.  Eight years later we were able to purchase a van for our program thanks to a grant from the Honolulu City & County.
