Dole Middle School, 9 April 2018

On April 9, 8th graders from Dole Middle school participating in the College for Every Student program experience what it’s like to be a science undergraduate student by participating in a Genetics lab in our modern teaching laboratory.

Dressed in lab coats and safety glasses, the students worked in small groups with an instructor to understand the DNA genetic code and to do a DNA extraction from their own cheek cells.

They discovered that learning is fun and exciting when you do it in a newly renovated laboratory, using amazing equipment, and when your instructors are super cool Chaminade science students.

Their visit was capped off with a campus tour to see other classroom settings, the library, student center, and other points of interest on our campus.

Chaminade science undergraduate and Ho’oulu scholar recipients served as instructors and role models for their younger peers, demonstrating service and a path toward higher education. They shared their personal pathway to Chaminade. Some knew exactly what they wanted to study, while others did not, but eventually discovered what they were passionate about.

We hope we instilled in the 8th graders a desire to go to college, to pursue their dreams, and to explore the opportunities to learn and grow.
